Wayne's World: Why Google Sucks“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil” since I am the most evil…in the forest so to speak. Enter Google who preaches “DON’T BE EVIL”. So why does Google really suck? That’s on a lot of Webmasters’ minds nowadays with this “Big Daddy” switch over. Let’s first look at Google down the road and their lovely path of “not evil things”. 1. The famous Google cookie that has an expiration date of 2038… Go figure a lovely harvest tool but in July 2004 a report said that 25% of Google cookies were deleted by users through their direct measurement panel. Have a look at this caption of the Gookie I like to call it IP GOOGLE. 2. Now welcome the Google Toolbar; this is now socially acceptable spyware and a keystroke logger once you do a search within the toolbar settings. Yup, that’s right; every time you type in your search term there, Google captures all your info. The worst part of this Toolbar is that it introduced the lovely PR little green line where Google deems the value of your website. This is a terrible procedure to evaluate a business site. How dare Google tell you what your website is valued! They preach “don’t be evil” but this created frenzy in the Webmaster community all looking for higher PR either to trade with or with buys. Please people, remember that this little green line is for “entertainment purposes only” and you must move away from that mindset of any value to it. Now with Google migrating to “social traffic patterns “ for authority sites this PR rank will eventually be dropped altogether…now when you download the toolbar it is automatically turned off and once you activate you are given a warning. Go figure. 3. Adwords. As Google becomes the media giant it plans to be, Adwords is the revenue model stream that pushes a lot of money behind it. That’s the Google solution. Don’t like your results? Buy Adwords. So as small business owners find out that you need to be spending 10K a month to get phone support that’s just unacceptable…Vive la Microsoft PPC rival to come. Google is also setting a new standard by being continually accused of click fraud thus the need for sites like this. 4. Google now squeezes out ad agencies on their commission for high end companies. For those who didn’t know Google would address larger ad agencies who represent Fortune companies using Adwords by offering these agencies commission on the sale or as I like to call it a “kick back” that carries heavy return revenue to all except the end client. The solution on reasoning for this…Buy Adwords. 5. Adsense. This is the Google Spam of all time. It got so bad that Google had to introduce a new bot (Media bot) to control these sites. At one point you couldn’t even search Google without these Google Adsense ridden sites appearing in the top positions…I wonder why? Click through cash seems to come to mind. So what happened? After tons of complaints to Google from end users, it introduced a Media bot to look for these spam sites and this indirectly affects normal sites with one or two ads running on them. Google don’t be evil; I think the cat is out of the bag on this one. Sorry, Google. Looks like the public would accept these crap listings, but nice try to inflate your income. I’m sure Google raked in enough cash on low targeting unrelated sites. I could literally go on with points all day, but that would be wasting too much time on a giant like this. They are not worth it. The fact of the matter is when it comes to conversion rates, MSN is leading the way with targeted males between 28-35 buying and looking mostly in MSN. So what does that tell us? So far this media giant has a lot of problems still. They are hoping no one comes up with “an original thought” and just continues using Google. I remember as a wee Webmaster sitting in my Dilbert cubicle years ago when Google was actually great. What happened? They decided to dominate the world and just brainwash other people into following their path. That’s the best thing Google has done for themselves and that takes away from small business. They hope the sheep will just keep following. The more you buy into this the more they will just keep selling you over and over again. Comments, questions, concerns? Fire them off and if I’m way out in left field on this, I welcome your comments. Until next time Googlers, happy searching and remember the one solution that really matters.
